From centuries India has been actively serving as world human healer. More than 5000 years ago, India introduced Panchakarma therapy for body detoxification and rejuvenation, with no competitors worldwide to this day.

India is progressing at an impressive rate and so is its Pharma industry. India alone supplies 80% of HIV drugs to the world, 70% of the world’s vaccines, and 20% of the world’s medicine. In comparison with developed countries, India still offers medicine that is 50%-100% more affordable. India is the sole country in possession of more than 858 USFDA approved plants.

All these magnificent figures are the result of hard work and dedication shown by Indian pharma manufacturers. Today we are going to talk about one such star performer in pharma industry. Who not only contributes to Indian pharma but has made a mark on global pharma industry as well.

Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd is the sole pharmaceutical manufacturer in the world, meeting 3.8% of global demand and 18% of India’s demand alone. Akums, established in Haridwar in 2005, rapidly became one of the world’s largest manufacturers.

The founder and chairman of Akums, Shree D.C Jain, initiated his pharma business with a small retail shop in Bhagirath Palace, Delhi, on October 31, 1984. The retail pharmacy was so small that they had to stand the entire day. Co-Founder directors Shree Sandeep Jain and Sandeep Jain saved one rupee from small consignments and worked as laborers at that time, managing to save more than 20 rupees per day.

During the COVID pandemic, Akums saved numerous lives by supplying medicine to patients in need worldwide. Akums stands alone in its significance, offering 20,000 direct jobs and an equal number of indirect jobs in India. Akums established hospitals during the pandemic and provided free treatment. Additionally, Akums offers free food and invests heavily in corporate social responsibility for employees who aspire to own a home, car, and provide education for their children.

The founder and chairman of Akums, Shree D.C Jain, was honored with the Pharma Ratna Universe award in 2019 in the male category, while Ms. Cara Turner, Global Director of CPHI, received the award in the female category. Shree D.C Jain is a mentor of mentors and a founding member of Pharma Ratna, whose guidance contributed to its global recognition.
