NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old woman and her two associates have been arrested for allegedly smuggling medicines like Alprazolam, Tramadol, and codeine-based syrups. The three have been identified as Rekha, Zubair and Faizan.

The police said they had recovered 144,904 tablets of Tramadol, 52,200 tablets of Alprazolam, 348 bottles of codeine-based syrup, and 1,600 injections of pentazocine, worth over Rs 10 crore in the international market. The illegal drugs were sold in Delhi and other states.

After completing her graduation from Delhi University, Rekha worked with a medicine firm, during which she picked up the tricks of the trade, police said. “She first started her own firm, where she sold medicine without invoices, which led to the cancellation of her licence. She then met a drug trafficker, Faizan, and got into the illegal distribution of medicines. She was running her own firm in the name of Vaishno Pharmaceuticals,” DCP Ingit Pratap Singh said.

Police received information that Faizan would procure a large consignment of drugs in East of Kailash and would deliver it to Kardampuri. “We did a raid at Captain Gaur Marg in East of Kailash and Faizan was caught. During the search, a large consignment of psychotropic drugs was found in the autorickshaw he had hired. We found drugs in his house in Kardampuri,” an officer said.

During interrogation, he told police that Zubair was the supplier of the contraband. He was also arrested, and drugs were recovered in his house at Indirapuram in Ghaziabad.

“We got to know about Rekha, who was apprehended in East of Kailash with Corex syrup bottles,” an officer said.

Police said Faizan worked as a salesman in various shops. “When he was working at a pharmacy shop, he learned about the illegal trade of psychotropic drugs and controlled medicines. He met Zubair in Loni in 2021 and started procuring drugs from Zubair every week and began supplying these drugs to different consumers,” a police source said, adding that Zubair used to procure contraband drugs from Aligarh.

Zubair, a BCom. graduate, learned about the illegal trade of contraband drugs from Naved in Kasganj. “Soon, he started his own business of procuring and supplying such drugs. He used to procure these drugs from various people and medical stores in Aligarh and Agra. He was arrested last year,” the police source said.
