Blast-hit pharma co had permission for 22 products

The suspected short-circuit related fire and serial blasts hit pharmaceutical company, Blue Jet Healthcare Ltd, located in the extended Mahad MIDC, Raigad have in December 2022 obtained the Maharashtra Pollution Board’s consent for 22 products and issued a renewal consent for another hazardous product.

These pharma products are antibiotics, cardiovascular antioxidants, Parkinson’s diseases among others.The blasts reported on Friday morning had killed 11 persons and injured 7.

Meanwhile, a team of MSEDCL officials had on Thursday visited the company as part of their inspection. The company is into production of various intermediate drugs. The MPCB consent containing 22 pharma products apart from effluent discharge, air emissions, non-hazardous wastes, hazardous and other wastes, among others, was shared with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) 5th battalion-Pune team.

The MPCB had issued a renewal consent to the pharma unit to operate the Red (hazardous) category industry to produce Quinine Sulphate (used to treat malaria) within a week after issuing the consent (for 22 products). The villagers nearby had protested number of times about various types of pollution from the plants nearby.

The MPCB sub regional officer, Indira Gaikwad said, “Since the consents were granted there were no incidents of any violations reported. Post fire incident, use of fire tenders for firefighting had led to discharge of polluted water to open areas. The polluted water has been diverted and connected to the common effluent treatment plant pipeline. One each sample of water and effluent has been sent for testing.”
The MSEDCL deputy engineer, CS Kendra said, “During our two rounds of inspection visit no fault was found from our side of supply. Whatever faults may have been reported must be inside their plant.”
